We were commissioned by reputable lawyers Dato Chris and Dato Fion to convert their unused guest room into a cozy theatre room for them to spend their weekends watching movies, playing video games or maybe even some late night karaoke sessions. They were also commonly hosting casual dinner parties with friends and required a suitable space to admire their newly bought cigars or rare collection of wines.

The location was at a duplex unit in a high-end apartment and noise transmission was definitely the primary issue in our design. No one likes a noisy neighbour. We consulted acoustics specialists and also did a significant amount of research on acoustic treatments and carefully placed acoustic panels at strategic positions to allow absorption of unwanted noises like echoes. This resulted in a more pleasant overall sound quality for the client’s movie and karaoke sessions.

The dull and practical nature of the acoustic panels were slightly aesthetically unpleasant, affecting the overall design. Therefore, we added sets of black mirrors flanked by copper strips to accompany the panels, balancing the practicality of the panels with aesthetics as well.

The overall ambient of the room was kept dark along with soft materials such as carpeted floors and the prominent high-pile rug to accommodate the cozy nature of the theatre room. To match the clients’ luxurious lifestyle and tastes, a hint of luxury was also added into the cozy design with the usage of polished copper strips, marble finishing table tops and a rich velvet texture for the sectional sofa.

The significance of the space’s functionality was obviously accentuated on the 65” television. Hence, a rather homogeneous and continuous visual leading line was started from the wall cushion behind the sofa connecting towards the drop ceiling and leading straight to the backboard of the TV console, placing the viewer’s subconscious emphasis on the large television.

The client is an avid cigar and wine collector and therefore required an extra space to store those items along with any additional boxes of unused items. A smaller vacant area extruded from the square layout of the room with the window was then partitioned to reduce noise transmission and to create a separate storage space. The window was actually the greatest source of noise leakage and therefore a strategic move was made to soundproof the window and create as many solid layers (soundproofing & partition wall) as possible to ensure the neighbors stay satisfied.
